BIO-TOILET Installation under Swachh Bharat Mission
The bio-toilets developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) represent a significant technological intervention aimed at eliminating open defecation and improving sanitation standards in both rural and urban areas. Recognizing their transformative potential, the Government of India, under the Swachh Bharat Mission, has promoted the adoption of bio-toilets as an affordable, eco-friendly, and sustainable sanitation solution capable of bringing about a revolutionary change in public health and hygiene.
In alignment with national sanitation objectives, HIMCON initiated the installation of DRDO-designed bio-toilets across Himachal Pradesh. HIMCON has worked in close coordination with Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, District Rural Development Agencies (DRDAs), Block Development Offices, and other government institutions to install bio-toilets at strategic locations throughout the State, ensuring coverage in remote, hilly, and environmentally sensitive areas.
These installations contribute directly to:
-
Elimination of open defecation
-
Improved public hygiene and environmental protection
-
Sustainable waste management using bio-digester technology
-
Strengthening sanitation infrastructure in difficult terrains
